Establishing trust and building relationships is necessary to succeed in today’s business world. Whether you are in B2B or B2C, without trust or solid relationships you are about as good as done for.

What is the secret ingredient that some seem to have and some don’t?

Empathy

Empathy is vital for building a successful relationship. It is one of the top qualities a human being should have both inside or outside of the business world.

Empathy is one’s ability to understand and “feel” the other person’s point of view and/or journey to get there. For some this may seem “intense” but without going deep into this, how can we ever understand who we are working with, who is working for us, and who we would like to network with?

Empathy is about complete understanding. It is not about enabling, agreeing, or sympathizing. Think about it as one’s ability to try to dig deep into your thoughts and motivations based on your words and actions. It is not used to make quick judgments or to condemn you for thinking or being different. It is a complete understanding or attempt at understanding what an individual has gone through to make them be or act the way they do.

This may seem like a simple ingredient; however, do not be fooled by its simplicity. Empathy takes time, self awareness, consciousness, and questioning to truly understand.
