It is often that I see many business “gurus” and advisors showing their methods and giving advice online, at events, or in books. Although that information is very valuable, you rarely see all the work that lead up to this success. It seems as if they are a human highlight reel.
If you sit down with each one of those individuals they could recall their mistakes and misfortunes and how they grew from each one to become what they are today. Error is a part of the game.
Some of my wonderful career mistakes include opening up a gym without even filing for a business license, allowing my temper and emotions to rule my actions for most of my early career, shaming people in hopes of motivation (both athletes and my team), micromanaging, and countless other mistakes. I would also like to say that if along the way if I ever hurt anyone’s feelings I am sorry. At the same time, I feel as though these and many more had to happen so I can grow.
“The best part of baseball is that errors are a part of the game. They are even on the scoreboard.” (Spirituality of Imperfection). We are the sum total of our experiences; each benefit us in the same manner of existence and differ in the way we handle them emotionally.
Sure we do not want to make mistakes; that is never our intention, but if your lack of trying is stopping you from getting in the game, you are going to be left behind.
Get in the game, bobble a few grounders, and learn how to adjust each time something does not sit right with you. Let your intuition guide you. Once you build confidence in yourself and trusting your gut the errors will feel like nothing more than quick learning experience and not an opportunity to beat yourself up or worse yet, stop you from trying again.
