The CrossFit affiliate landscape has evolved greatly during the last five years. As the sport, once considered a fad, reaches it tenth year, many owners find the need to grow to be relative to the potential of the sport itself.
Early on the major goal of any affiliate owner was to grow the membership to over 200 members. This would represent a milestone in his or her success. More people means more money; however, one must always consider if quality control is lost within perpetual growth.
The more I speak with box owners, the more I grasp that there is a universal focus on service, depth of relationships, quality programming, and community. The 400 member revolving door affiliate is not an ideal because it does not capture the essence of the sport and will will not garner longevity.
So what is a owner to do? I suggest looking to what you really want in your business. What you want it to stand for and how can you implement change. Bigger and more is not the answer for everyone. A solid 125 membership gym may be what gives you and your staff the most fulfillment, so go build that. A 400 member box in a major metropolitan location may be your ideal model, so go and build that. Remember with growth you always run the risk of watering down your product; don’t do it!
Whatever it is, build the business of your dreams. Dreams do not mean more money; dreams are what fulfills you. Sure we all need to make money, but how much is enough?
Be true to who you are as a person, then let that permeate through your business.
