There comes a point in time that we all need help with something. Even the most prideful person cannot succeed without assistance from someone. There truly is nothing wrong with asking for assistance; in fact, it is essential to evolving. The key is to find individuals who will add value to your cause. Advice and guidance does not stem from negativity or myopic focus on what you cannot accomplish.
The saying “if you can’t add don’t subtract” comes from a difficult yet beneficial time in my life. I had to begin working at a very young age- like call DCFS young. My father presented my options for my situation in these terms; I needed to add something to the family and stop subtracting. At the time I did not necessarily grasp the magnitude of the sentiment until much later in life.
When seeking out guidance or soliciting advice from others, it is also your responsibility to engage them and add unto their life. To take is of great benefit to one; however, to share develops both parties. Each of us have unique gifts that, when fostered with shared knowledge, can be used to improve our community. Further find a way to be gracious and kind in the process. The magnitude of the giving will not always be directly relative to what you receive, but all information and action has value when the intentions are true.
What you add in life is yours forever, what you take is lost forever!
